From Homemaker to Digital Banker: Sunita’s BC Sakhi Journey in Uttar Pradesh
"Once confined to domestic chores, Sunita Devi now runs a bustling rural micro-banking kiosk, serving over 1,200 villagers monthly and earning financial independence."
In the quiet hamlet of Sevapuri near Varanasi, 34-year-old Sunita Devi has become a household name. As a Business Correspondent (BC) Sakhi trained under the Grameen Foundation for Social Impact initiative, Sunita delivers doorstep banking, pension disbursements, and digital remittance services to elders and women who previously had to travel 15 kilometers to the nearest branch.
"Before joining the BC Sakhi programme, I had never operated a smartphone. Today, I process transactions worth lakhs every month, and people in my village respect me as their trusted banker."
Breaking Stereotypes with Digital Literacy
Equipped with biometric micro-ATM devices and comprehensive financial literacy modules, Sunita learned how to conduct KYC verifications, assist senior citizens with DBT pension transfers, and advise SHG members on prudent micro-savings.
Her income has allowed her daughter to enroll in an English-medium school, creating a generational leap towards gender equality and economic empowerment.
